We had a communion service at the site of the Wounded Knee massacre. Just a few feet away from the mass grave into which frozen bodies of men, women and children were dumped. Treated like garbage.
The pick-up that took the supplies for our service to the site is also used to haul garbage. There is something very fitting, very Christ-like in using this pick-up for this prayer service at this site.
I know there are words for it, but I can't find them.
Still, it is a powerful symbol to me.
I'm struck by the fact the we are called everyday to re-member the Body of Christ, which is too often treated like garbage.
Didn't Jesus tell his friends that night to re-member him? Is that too loose a translation?
